The STAR has utilized several designs, improving as new medical technologies have allowed advances in the device. The current version of the STAR has been unchanged since 1998. An article outlining clinical results with a prior generation of the STAR that utilized a single HA coating was recently published. This design was used a handful of times in the US, and has not been available for implantation anywhere in the world since 2001. The STAR currently available in the US uses a titanium plasma spray, which has become a standard implant design used in many medical devices, such as hip and knee replacements.
